9/17 Update on "The Battle of the Death Star" Event

A couple of changes to "The Battle of the Death Star" event occured overnight (US time overnight that is), about a day earlier than many of us Marvel: War of Heroes veterans would have expected:

First of all, the fabled ???? bosses were revealed as "Super Rare Bosses."  These super rare bosses drop nothing but Gold Card Packs, with two of the Gold Card Packs giving you 2x and 5x better chances to draw a 5* card.

Not only that, they seem to have quietly fixed the issue where people weren't getting credit for shared 0BP "kill shots," seeming to confirm that this was a bug, and not part of the game design itself.

Finally, the event introduced a new "ATK Boost" mode, which will randomly drop while doing quests and give you a supposed 1.5x attack power against bosses for five minutes after gaining the ATK Boost.

Now, I'm usually doing approximately 300K per hit under normal attack mode against standard bosses.  When I go into "ATK Boost" mode, my attacks are around 330K.  I'm no math major, but that doesn't seem like 1.5x...

With this looking like the final tweak to the event prior to its end, let me do a quick review on the event as far as I have seen it:

Good:
  • Really no reason to spend money on this first event, unless you want good raider cards.  The 0BP for initial hits, and the fact that you score a full kill against bosses that go down, regardless of how much damage you did, is an interesting change from the game mechanics I'm used to in raid events.
  • The addition of battles in the questing to earn more BP was a nice addition to break up the monotony of quest, hit boss once, quest, go back and kill bosses.  It also allowed a nice way to test the strength of your deck against similiarly ranked opponents without incurring any losses (either BP or vehicle/stack destruction).
  • Super super easy to collect boss kills, as long as you've got active allies.
The Bad:
  • Really no reason to spend money on this first event, unless you want good raider cards.  Yes, that was a plus too, but in this case, what I'm talking about is the lack of any true tangible rewards.  Card packs are nice as mid-level rewards, but as you reach the highest level of compeitition, you want to be rewarded with some sort of ultimate prize, not a chance to get an ultimate prize.  As it is, my Gold x2 pack I won from completing the rare bosses?  A 3* Snowtrooper.  Given the ease of this event, I wouldn't expect completing all levels to give me a 5* card, but at the very least, once we moved on to the Super Rare Bosses, I was hoping and partially expecting for a way to earn a guaranteed 4* card.
  • No real use for Light/Dark ranking or individual ranking stats.  What this means is that once you complete all the levels of reward rankings, at a certain point, there's no reason to keep battling.  Bragging rights are nice, but given the fact that the social aspects of this game are a bit lacking (more on that in a later post) bragging rights don't mean much at all...
The Ugly:
  • 300,000 * 1.5 = 450,000.  Math is hard...
  • Not crediting kills for 0BP kill shots, but then adding them in without any mention of the bug, even though it had been reported here and at AppInvasion and NeoSeeker?  C'mon guys...it's called community relations...
The "We'll See":
  • In six hours of playing thus far, I've gotten 1 super rare boss and been shared 1 super rare boss (with me not letting my EP fill up for more than 10 minutes at a time).  Now granted, they are supposed to be super rare, but given the amount that I'm playing the game, I would expect to be able to kill off the 50 needed in the next 7 days without any issue.
I'm going to give the game a few more events before I make up a final judgment on the game, but this event gets a solid C from me.  Here's hoping they can raise it up to a B+ by the next event, because given the (in my opinion) flaws this game has thus far, another sub-par event could be disasterous for the long-term viability of what has started out as very promising.

Updated Event Information

A quick change to the guide regarding the way that boss kills are credited.  A number of people were noticing that they were not getting credit for some of the shared bosses they assisted in killing.  It looks like there is one instance in which shared boss kills are not credited to you.

If you are able to kill a shared boss (a boss shared to you by someone else) by only utilizing your 1 free 0BP hit, you do not get credit for the kill.

So you get credit for the following:

  • Any boss that you generate and is subsquently killed.
  • Any shared boss that you attack, but do not kill on the first (0BP) hit.
Not sure if this is a bug or by design, but it does seem pretty odd.  If anyone else finds any other boss kills not being credited from other ways, please let me know.

Jumping right in... Battle for the Death Star Event

Apologies for just jumping into the fray with the first post, but instead of going into the basics in terms of game mechanics and the like, which will come later, I thought I'd introduce people to the event that's going on right now so that they can hit the ground running trying to earn the rewards available here. In addition, because the event mechanics are a bit different from events in other trading card games, a quick little primer I thought was in order.

The goal in this event is to defeat as many bosses as you can during the event's two-week time frame. You are able to generate bosses to defeat by questing the special event quest.

Questing notes:

When you do the event questing, you will receive an additional EXP point for every quest unit you do (for example, you get 3 EXP for each questing attack that costs 2 Energy Points).

Quest Drops:
100-150 credits
Stormtrooper stacks

At the end of a quest you recieve 1 BP capsule.

Random Quest Items:

Find an Ally - Occasionally you will recieve a note that you can recieve help from an ally on your next boss encounter. Accept the help because there is no cost to you, and it makes your boss attacks more effective.

Battle a Player - Occasionally you will be able to battle a player. These battles are just like normal battles except that they do not cost anything in terms of BP and if you succeed in winning the battle you receive one BP capsule good for use during the event if you win. There is no penalty for losing (i.e. losing stacks of cards or vehicles), so there's really no reason not to take advantage of these battles. Scores are added to your daily and weekly rankings based upon the results of these battles. EDIT: As of 9/12, no scores are provided for wins/losses in quest battles.

Bosses - Occasionally you will spawn a boss. Bosses are generated in two categories: Normal and Hard. Each boss type has its own reward structure.

When you battle bosses, you are given a group of 10 cards which the system automatically generates for you that gives you the biggest attack capabilities. If you have found allies during your questing, they will join you in the fight for a total of 12 possible attackers against the boss.

Certain cards released today receive a bonus upon attacking bosses. This bonus is 3x for the three star cards and 6 x for four star cards. A guaranteed event card is provided upon the purchase of the new 11 card event pack that costs 3000 crystals.

When you attack a boss, the first hit upon generating a boss costs 0 BP. Subsequent attacks against bosses cost 2 BP for a 1x attack strength attack or 5BP for a 3x attack strength attack.

If you are unable to defeat a boss upon your first hit, you have the option to share your bosses with other players. The sharing function is random in terms of the other players you request help from.

You may occasionally have bosses shared with you, just as you can share bosses with others. The same attacking rules apply.  So it's best to hit every boss you see at least once, then watch them to make sure they go down.

If any boss that you attack, whether you generated the boss yourself or you assisted with someone else's boss, is defeated, you receive full credit for the defeat of the boss, earning both a reward of 50AP and credit towards the event rewards.

Strategy points:

Attack your generated bosses once then share immediately. Let others defeat your boss. If no one does with a few minutes left, defeat it yourself.

Event cards:

Your best bet for event cards is to boost individually but do not evolve as there is only approximately a 20% increase in max stats when you perfectlly evolve and enhance.

Hope this helps!
